Agriculture and Nutrition Study at University Caribe Primary School

Nutrition is one of the most important modifiable determinants of health. Adequate nutrition is particularly important during childhood and adolescents, where critical growth and development occur.

There are several variables affecting nutrition security in Haiti. Lack of adequate food consumption due to poverty and poor agricultural practices account for 58% of Haiti’s population being undernourished. Additionally, 30% of children under five years of age in Haiti meet criteria for chronic malnutrition, while 10% of this population meets criteria for acute malnutrition.

This study will investigate the baseline nutritional status of a group of primary school children, and use this data to develop a sustainable model for health and nutrition security in a small rural community in Haiti.
